Why I became a sperm donor – Amit’s story
Amit decided to become a sperm donor after seeing his friends struggling to find a donor for their IVF treatment. Here he tells his story.
I was born and raised in India where the donation process is very complicated and there are lots of legal complexities. My friend and his wife were unable to find a donor and that was difficult to see.
When I came back to the UK, I did some research online and I came across the HFEA website. I read through all the information about what is involved, and the legal implications, and I felt really comfortable about donating here because of the regulation that’s in place.
The process was really clear and simple
I used Choose a Fertility Clinic to search for clinics accepting donors and made a few initial enquiries. One clinic in particular stood out because they were very clear on the process and it was very much in line with what I’d read about on the HFEA website.
It’s all been very straight forward and it’s such a good feeling knowing that I’m potentially helping someone to create the family they have longed for.
I’m excited for what the future may hold
I think it’s great that donation isn’t anonymous in the UK. I’ll be applying to the HFEA to find out if any children have been born from my donation and if they want to contact me when they’re 18, I’d be very open to that. It would be nice to sit down with them over a cup of tea or coffee and get to know each other.
At the end of the day, I’m proud and privileged to have helped someone to create their family.
