HFEA wins prestigious award for data dashboard

The fertility regulator was announced as the 2024 Winner of the Award for Statistical Excellence in Trustworthiness, Quality and Value.

The HFEA received the award for its dashboard, which holds national UK fertility data going back to 1991. The award was made by the Office for Statistics Regulation, in partnership with the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and Civil Service World.

The HFEA holds information on fertility treatments, patients, partners, donors and children born as a result of these treatments in the UK, which is believed to be the longest running database of its kind in the world.

The dashboard offers access to accurate and customisable UK-wide data which is quickly and easily accessible on the HFEA website and users can breakdown data on treatments birth rates and other categories by, for example, type of treatment, partners, age and location.

Visitors to the dashboard are able to break down data on fertility treatments.

Peter Thompson, Chief Executive of the HFEA, said: “We’re delighted that the HFEA dashboard has won this year’s Trustworthiness, Quality & Value award.

“Our dashboard, which we believe to be the first of its kind in the world, is designed to provide impartial information in an easy-to-use format to help inform the many difficult decisions around fertility treatment. This award is a real tribute to the quality of work of our expert team at the HFEA and a recognition of the huge interest in UK fertility data.

“The HFEA will continue to build on the work recognised by this award and enable the public, clinicians and researchers to access the data we collect. Thank you to the Office for Statistics Regulation and the Royal Statistical Society for the award.”

Notes to editors

  • The HFEA is the UK’s independent regulator of fertility treatment and research using human embryos
  • Set up in 1990 by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, the HFEA is responsible for licensing, monitoring, and inspecting fertility clinics - and taking enforcement action where necessary - to ensure everyone accessing fertility treatment receives high quality care.
  • The HFEA is an ‘arm’s length body’ of the Department for Health and Social Care, working independently from Government providing free, clear, and impartial information about fertility treatment, clinics and egg, sperm and embryo donation.
  • The HFEA collects and verifies data on all treatments that take place in UK licensed clinics which can support scientific developments and research and service planning and delivery.
  • Around 4,100 children in the UK are born each year through the help of a donor (2019). The HFEA holds records of all donors and children born since 1991.
  • The HFEA is funded by licence fees, IVF treatment fees and a small grant from UK central government. For more information, visit hfea.gov.uk.
