HFEA Statement: Regulating fertility treatment
Please see our statement below on fertility treatment that took place before 1991.
Peter Thompson, chief executive of the HFEA, said:
“The HFEA was formed in 1991 to oversee fertility treatment using sperm, eggs and embryos and research using embryos in the UK. We ensure fertility clinics comply with the laws and standards by inspecting and licensing clinics. The HFEA holds a register of all treatments and outcomes from 1991.
“Prior to 1991, no regulations were in place, so we do not hold any records of fertility treatments that took place before then.
“We appreciate it can be difficult to find out as an adult that you are donor conceived. You can find out more information on our website about organisations who can help”.
