Peter Thompson, HFEA Chief Executive:

"Our last strategy was launched in 2017 with a clear focus on ensuring patients receive the highest quality care. Since then, we have worked with the sector to improve regulatory compliance, especially in lowering multiple births – the biggest risk of fertility treatment – and enhanced the support patients receive and the information they are given before and during treatment. We have also made the information we provide clear, impartial and accessible; and driven up standards of clinic leadership across the UK.

"The new proposed three-year strategy continues many of these themes. We are determined that patients and their partners will receive the best quality information and care before, during and after treatment; and that, as the UK wide regulator, we are prepared for any future changes that will affect the sector. As a values-based organisation we will continue to make decisions informed by both ethical and scientific concerns.

"Our work with professionals and patient groups on reducing the multiple birth rate, and our recent focus on the way in which treatment add-ons are offered in fertility clinics, demonstrates that working collaboratively makes us a stronger force. We plan to continue these collaborations in the future.”
